Yesterday, Google announced a new “stable” release of its open source browser for Windows, adding some 1,500 “Extensions” (which add functions to the browser toolbar) and “Bookmark Sync”, which synchronizes bookmarks across multiple computers. It’s the “stable” part that really interests me, as a neat reminder of Google’s larger philosophy of iterative innovation

Network infrastructure strategies for 2010
Ford CEO Alan Mulally delivered the opening keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas this morning. The car company’s theme, ahead of next week’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit and the inevitable spotlight shone on the ailing industry? Innovation and design, with a big push for the update to its three-year-old Sync internal communications and entertainment system.

Ford and IDEO redesign the dashboard
Last night the Plain English Campaign award ceremony was held in London. The 30th time these gongs have been doled out, individual prizes include “Golden Bull” awards, “for the worst examples of written tripe” as well as the “Foot in Mouth” award, “for baffling quotes by public figures.” The latter was won this year by none other than Peter Mandelson, the U.K.’s Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills

As I was chairing the first day of the Open Innovation Summit today, I was struck by something that many speakers acknowledged: Their companies converted to open innovation—relying on outsiders for their next products or services—only after falling into a crisis. Moreover, the panic struck most around the time of the previous recession in 2001, which suggests that we should start seeing many more open-innovation practitioners soon. Among those that found religion a decade ago are Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, and Whirlpool.

Rules stifle innovation, says Microsoft Research’s Rick Rashid

Graphics may be applied to any type of enclosure with silkscreening and padprinting, or with an adhesive-backed label. While in some circumstances painted graphics will look better or be more cost-effective, labels are free from many of the quality issues of silkscreened enclosures and can also cover unsightly features in the enclosure surface, especially where holes have been drilled or machined in. Labels can be made with die-cut openings for buttons, knobs, displays and other user features, and may also incorporate transparent windows with or without color for displays.
