Roving Reporter: Fanless Flat-Panel PCs Operate in Harsh Environments Using Intel® Atom™ Processors

Harsh, demanding environments often typify many industrial computer applications. Remote sites can offer little or no protection from severe weather conditions or heat

Roving Reporter: Optimize Your Memory Configuration to Maximize Performance

Platform hardware and software tuning help you to extract the last bit of performance out of a system but hardware configuration ultimately determines a platform’s performance potential. Nowhere is this statement truer than for memory configuration.

Copenhagen, Goldman Sachs and Capital Allowances

Whether you believe all the science or not, the Copenhagen Climate Agreement is getting a massive amount of attention from the world’s media. We have our own perspective on that, especially given the fact that IT is to be included on the agenda, potentially having carbon credits for emission-reduction IT projects in developing countries . Another one in the news recently is The City, with bonuses for RBS staff and Goldman Sachs having ring-fenced huge amounts for their bonus pool

    Government shrinking networking systems

HM Revenue and Customs will trim one of the UK’s largest outsourcing contracts. There will be a reduction in the £840 million that they currently spend on IT annually, by shrinking its networking systems and shutting down a number of datacentres . After, what can only be described as a disappointing integration of systems when the Inland Revenue and Customs & Excise merged in 2005.

20 hour to upgrade Windows 7 … maybe, but it’s a fringe case

Last Friday Chris Hernandez, a Microsoft Software Engineer, posted benchmark result data to show how Microsoft had managed to get the Windows 7 upgrade time to be faster than, or at least equal within the five percent, to the Vista SP1 upgrade time. One data point however stands out in this sea of numbers, and that’s the one that shows how upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 (32-bit) where the system has 650Gb of data and 40 applications could take as long as 1215 minutes on mid-range hardware.

End of availability of the ProLiant G5 range has been moved up to 3 weeks

This should come as no surprise to Hardware.com customers; we have been informing our client base of the upgrade to G6 and the advantages of doing just this. Hardware.com was the second to announce the new G6 server range when it was launched in April 09, HP asked us not to pre-empt their official launch so hp.com was the first. HP generally has a 3-month overlap period between introducing a new server and the old version becoming end of life

    Finding your network infrastructure quest

Many stories, myths and films revolve around a near impossible mission, people travelling miles in the most inhospitable environments to bring back an extraordinary item. It’s all about the quest, not the actual item itself, it’s the mission that matters and gets everyone pointing in the same direction, that’s about a common goal, leadership and change. It creates action and motion, and motion in some direction is often better than no motion at all
